insurance crackdown means thousands of drivers risk large fines and destruction of their vehicles

Police forces around the UK have launched a new crackdown on criminal drivers. Offenders have been warned they could face an unlimited fine and have their car seized and crushed for failing to have insurance in place.

Around 35 forces are taking place in Operation Drive Insured, which launched this week as the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) and DVLA revealed that they had issued more than five million warning letters to uninsured drivers.

99.8% compliance achieved in Ireland's National Slow Down Day

National Slow Down Day was held over a 24-hour period between 7am Friday 19th and 7am Saturday 20th October 2018. In total, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe checked 164,032 vehicles, detecting 276 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit. That means there was a compliance rate of greater than 99.8 per cent. 

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority would like to thank the drivers who were compliant and drove within the speed limit. We would encourage all drivers to drive safely and respect speed limits.

Car industry attempting to weaken the European Commission’s proposals on new vehicle safety measures

TISPOL has joined a group of safety experts, consumer groups, environmental campaigners, city authorities, cyclists and road accident victims have written today to members of the European Parliament's Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) to raise concerns over the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA)'s attempts to weaken the European Commission’s proposals on new vehicle safety measures and to ask MEPs to pass the legislation as soon as possible, to maximise its life-saving potential.

Sgt Peter Woods wins TISPOL President's Award

Congratulations to Sgt Peter Woods, who has won a TISPOL President's Award for his outstanding contribution to road safety. Peter is currently attached to the Dublin Metropolitan Roads Policing Division of An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s National Police Service. He was first attested to the service in 1993 and began his career on beat duties in a suburban station in Dublin. In 1998, he was a member of the team that founded the Garda Mounted Unit and went on to become a leading expert in the tactical deployment of mounted resources in community policing and public order scenarios.
