TISPOL Road Policing Seminar attracts positive comments from participants

Thirty-six participants from 14 European countries met from 6 to 10 August to get information and to exchange views on different aspects of road safety. The Road Policing Seminar was organised for a second time by the German TISPOL office in cooperation with the Rhineland-Palatinate Police University.

Week-long police speed enforcement operation begins today

POLICE OFFICERS across Europe commence a week-long speed enforcement operation starting today (Monday 6 August). During the operation, co-ordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), officers will use a number of speed detection methods across all types of road. The purpose of the operation is to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, and to remind drivers of the benefits for all road users of driving at speeds that are both legal and appropriate. 

France introduces 80km/h limit on 400,000km of road

Two-lane roads with no separating guard rail in France have had their default speed limit reduced from 90 to 80 km/h since 1 July, fulfilling a commitment made by the Prime Minister in January.

The change applies on 40% of the French road network; some 400,000 km of roads are affected by the lower limit.

The government says that 350-400 deaths a year could be prevented by the measure. 55% of French road deaths occur on two-lane roads with no separating guard rail.

Ninth edition of 'Countermeasures that work' published

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published its newest edition of Countermeasures that Work: A Highway Safety Countermeasures Guide for State Highway Safety Offices. The guide is a basic reference to assist State Highway Safety Offices in selecting effective, evidence-based countermeasures for traffic safety problem areas. Among the areas covered is alcohol- and drug-impaired driving. The guide also deals with seat belts, speeding, distracted and drowsy driving, young drivers and other important safety topics.
