Distracted driving: could an incentive-based scheme be effective?

An Austrian technology firm has evaluated the driving behaviour of 18,626 car drivers in Europe and North America who own a smartphone, and come to an alarming conclusion:

Only 16 per cent of these drivers completely abstain from using their smartphones behind the wheel. 

While a significant 44 per cent are distraction-free for more than 90% of their time driving, fully 10 per cent of drivers spend more than 50 per cent of their driving time on the phone.

Croatia: preventive action "Safe Vincekovo"

“Vincekovo” in Croatia is a folk-custom of blessing vineyards when in January the vineyards are “fed” with to homemade sausages and other meat products and watered with wine so they can produce well. Since increased alcohol consumption is linked to this folk custom, Police Directorat Koprivnica-Križevci conducted the preventive action “Safe Vincekovo” on a Friday in January to prevent traffic accidents caused by drink drivers.

Croatia: police action against poor driving

Police officers at Koprivnica-Križevci, Croatia, on January 21, 2020, from 11am to 4pm, conducted action aimed at improper driving actions such as improper turning and not giving turning signals, improper overtaking of other vehicles, improper reversing, improper parking, etc.

During the action, police officers controlled 74 drivers and sanctioned 50 traffic violations altogether. 

They sanctioned 26 targeted traffic violations, of which:

- 12 non-uses of turn signals,

- 7 non-compliances of traffic sings regulating the intersection traffic,
