Drugs campaign 'Etoile' proves a great drug trap

Police and customs services from the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and Belgium jointly held an international campaign against drug trafficking and drug tourism from Thursday 7 February to Sunday 10 February 2019.

241 of the 2 175 people checked were in possession of drugs and 19 of them were under the influence.

31 people were legally arrested and 10 vehicles were confiscated.

Checks on parking and resting areas in Germany: One in five truck drivers had alcohol in their systems

Time and again serious accidents occur because truck drivers continue their trips under the influence of alcohol after their resting period on Sunday. Therefore police officers have increased their controls at parking and resting areas. The results of last Sunday evening however are very worrying:

328 truck drivers have been checked

68 of them had alcohol in their system

48 of them were prohibited from further travel

19 truck drivers have had an alcohol concentration between 0,5 %o and 1,09 %o (promille). 

Germany: officer uses dog power and pink scooter to catch suspect

Police officer Christian Plötz commandeered an unusual vehicle to pursue and arrest an offender recently.  The man, while jogging in a nature reserve in the city of Worms, was alleged to have attacked a a woman who was exercising her dog using a scooter. 

The woman, who had been pushed to the ground by the jogger, called the police and was fortunate to find a patrol officer very close by. Officer Plötz tried to follow the suspect on foot, but failed to keep up with him.

Romania:theft leaves section of Bucharest motorway without lighting

Half of the ‘urban highway’, a 6 km segment of the A3 highway between Bucharest and Ploiesti, has been left without lighting after thieves stole the underground cable powering the lighting system.

The highway segment, which takes drivers into the capital, was only inaugurated in mid-December. It is lit to offer increased visibility and safety. Now, only half of the segment has the required lighting.

Lithuania achieves 11 per cent reduction in road fatalities year-on-year

In 2018 the number of people killed in traffic accidents in Lithuania was reduced by 11 per cent - thaT'S 24 FEWER THAN IN 2017. Over the last two decades, an impressive reduction in road deaths of up to 80 per cent has been achieved! Police say they are proud of the joint work done by government institutions, police, social partners, traffic organisations and other road safety partners. "We are confidently moving towards a Vision Zero," said a police spokesperson.
