Driving offences decline could be due to specialist road officer cuts, say MPs

The reduction in the number of motoring offences over the past decade may be due to cuts in the number of specialist road police officers rather than an improvement in driving standards, MPs have claimed.

The total number of offences detected on roads in England and Wales more than halved from 4.3 million in 2004 to 1.6 million in 2013, the last year for which figures are available.

Seatbelt enforcement operation takes place all this week

Police officers across Europe will be conducting seatbelt checks throughout this week (14 to 20 March). Vehicle occupants who do not wear their seatbelt will be issued with a penalty.

TISPOL President Aidan Reid says:  “Using a seatbelt is a quick and simple task; it’s also a highly effective way of reducing the consequences of a collision. That’s why wearing a seatbelt is not a matter of personal choice, but is compulsory for drivers and passengers in every European country.

“Yet there are still drivers and passengers who for whatever reason do not use a seatbelt.

Malta: Saturday night drink-drive operation

On Saturday night (5 March), the Traffic Police effected various road checks in St. Julian's where a total of 90 vehicles were stopped and inspected.

During these spot checks seven drivers were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol which exceeded the prescribed limit and several others were stopped for contraventions such as operating mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts and driving a vehicle without number plates, amongst others.
