European drink-drive operation results show most drivers are obeying the rules

  • One in 64 drivers tested was over the limit in this year’s operation, compared with one in 59 in 2013
  • 15,724 alcohol offences from 1,010,000 breath tests in 26 countries
  • 4,760 drug offences recorded
  • 28 TISPOL member countries across Europe took part 
  • More than 750 other crimes (drug possession, firearms, human trafficking, stolen goods) also detected during alcohol tests

 

Police officers across Europe prepare for week-long truck and bus safety enforcement operation

A week-long operation focusing on truck and bus safety across Europe begins on Monday 22 July. Co-ordinated by TISPOL, the European Roads Policing Network, the operation will see police officers in 27 countries carrying out a wide range of safety inspections that focus on speeding, alcohol, drugs, seatbelt use, tachograph infringements, excess weight, dangerous loading and document offences. 

Netherlands: police officers use buses and coaches to detect distracted drivers

In the Netherlands, much attention is paid to distraction in traffic through the use of a mobile phone. In order to take enforcement action, regular checks have recently been carried out using a coach, truck or motorhome to be able to properly observe the violations.

On June 19 and 20, during a major traffic check on the motorways in the provinces Gelderland and Overijssel, the traffic police handed out more than 500 fines. The police used the "bus" during the check.
