Police across Europe prepare for week-long speed enforcement operation

  • 24-hour ‘Speed Marathon’ starts 00.00 on Wednesday 3 April in 26 countries
  • Identical operation in 2018 saw 257,639 speed offences recorded in 23 participating countries


Police officers across Europe are making ready for their latest week-long speed enforcement operation, which runs for a week from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 April. Included in the week’s activity is this year’s 24-hour ‘Speed Marathon’, starting at 0000 on Wednesday 3 April. 

Automatic speed limiters to be standard on all new cars from 2022

All new cars could be fitted with special devices from 2022 to automatically make them keep to the speed limit after new EU rules were provisionally agreed.

Intelligent speed assistance (ISA) is one of a raft of safety measures set to become mandatory in European vehicles after the plans were given approval by the European Commission.

It is claimed the measures could help save more than 25,000 lives and avoid at least 140,000 serious injuries by 2038.

Truck driver alcohol and drug offences double

The number of alcohol and drug offences among truck and coach drivers has doubled since 2018, according to results from TISPOL's latest enforcement operation. 

From 19 to 24 February, a Europe-wide TISPOL enforcement operation focusing on trucks and buses took place. The safety of commercial goods and passenger transport was central to the operation, which involved coordinated police controls in 29 participating  countries.

Research team issues new phone warning for drivers: legal doesn’t equal safe

Researchers from the University of Keele are reminding drivers that using a phone hands-free at the wheel may be legal, but this doesn’t make it safe. 

The call comes as they launch a new compendium (on Tuesday 12 March) that aims to help practitioners design effective methods of deterring mobile phone use among drivers.
