Seatbelt enforcement operation takes place all this week

Police officers across Europe will be conducting seatbelt checks throughout this week (14 to 20 March). Vehicle occupants who do not wear their seatbelt will be issued with a penalty.

TISPOL President Aidan Reid says:  “Using a seatbelt is a quick and simple task; it’s also a highly effective way of reducing the consequences of a collision. That’s why wearing a seatbelt is not a matter of personal choice, but is compulsory for drivers and passengers in every European country.

“Yet there are still drivers and passengers who for whatever reason do not use a seatbelt.

Malta: Saturday night drink-drive operation

On Saturday night (5 March), the Traffic Police effected various road checks in St. Julian's where a total of 90 vehicles were stopped and inspected.

During these spot checks seven drivers were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol which exceeded the prescribed limit and several others were stopped for contraventions such as operating mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts and driving a vehicle without number plates, amongst others.

Cyprus: road safety campaign results

Traffic police in Cyprus have issued 20,000 traffic violation fines in just one month, over half of which were for speeding. According to police statistics, a road safety campaign carried out between February 1 and March 3 this year saw the authorities reporting 10,179 motorists for speeding. The other 9,858 cases were for other road safety-related offences.

The checks also included 9,611 breathalyser tests, of which 915 were over the legal limit.

Spain: police arrest truck driver SEVEN TIMES over the drink-drive limit

Guardia Civil Traffic Police Force in Murcia detained a truck driver (on Thursday 3 March) with a level of alcohol seven times above the legal level permitted. The driver of an Irish-registered 40-tonne truck was a 37 years old Polish man, who had caused a traffic collision where another truck was involved. After the incident, the driver’s alcohol test reached a level seven times above the legal level permitted (1´12 mg/l). The driver was detained and charged with offences against the Traffic Safety.

Poland: police checks show more than 50% of drivers were speeding

Last week, in Poland's Lubuski region, a series of speed checks took place. Police officers checked 800 drivers. Among them, 500 received fines and penalty points because they were driving too fast.

In the city of Zielona Gora, a 38-year-old Nissan driver was detected at 142 km/h in a location where the speed limit was 70 km/h. He received a fine of 500 PLN (around €115), 10 penalty points and lost his driving licence.
