On 5 January, in the Dublin District Court, seven motorists were convicted of offences involving fraudulent use of disabled parking permits. The offences were detected in recent months as part of ‘Operation Enable’ an ongoing initiative to tackle permit misuse, launched last year by Irish Police and led by Sergeant Peter Woods of the Dublin Metropolitan Regional Roads Policing Division.

Minister Ross welcomes Garda commitment for another 10% increase in traffic police numbers
Provisional road collision statistics for 2017, published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) following an analysis of fatal collision reports supplied by An Garda Síochána, show that there has been a 15% drop in road deaths in 2017 compared to 2016.
A 23-year-old German police officer was killed and two other officers were seriously injured in an accident with a truck on the A61 highway near Viersen, just across the border from the Netherlands. The German police were parked along the highway, waiting for the truck after the Dutch police warned them about the truck's driving behavior, NOS reports.
It was with great sadness that we learnt this week of the passing of Marita Löytty, a dear friend and colleague of TISPOL and a regular speaker at our Conferences.
Marita worked for the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) as a Special Adviser on driver licensing. Part of her responsibility was managing Trafi’s role in Finland’s nationwide programme for rehabilitating repeat drink driving offenders through the use of alcohol interlocks. She was a leading European expert in this life-saving area of policy and a regular speaker at ETSC events around Europe.
On the 13th December last in Croke Park Stadium in Dublin, Ireland’s Road Safety Authority held their annual ‘Leading Lights’ Awards Ceremony. Now in their tenth year the ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards’ recognise and honour the contribution made by people nationwide in reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Awards are presented in 25 categories to individuals or organisations who have made an outstanding contribution to road safety in their respective fields.
