TISPOL's 24-hour speed marathon begins Wednesday 0600

POLICE OFFICERS across Europe are making ready for their latest ‘Speed Marathon’, taking place from 0600 on Wednesday 18 April to 0600 on Thursday 19 April. The 24-hour initiative forms part of TISPOL’s week-long speed enforcement operation, running from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 April.

 

Figures from 2017 show that of 2,939,375 vehicles checked during the 24-hour operation, 2,788,302 (95 per cent) were using legal speeds and that 151,073 offences were detected, either by police officers or by technical means. 

 

Week-long speed enforcement operation starts today

Police officers across Europe commence a week-long speed enforcement operation starting today (Monday 16 April). During the operation, co-ordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), officers will use a number of speed detection methods across all types of road. The purpose of the operation is to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, and to remind drivers of the benefits for all road users of driving at speeds that are both legal and appropriate.

POLICE OFFICERS across Europe are preparing for their latest "Speed Marathon", taking place from 0600 on Wednesday 18 April to 0600 on Thursday 20 April. The 24-hour initiative forms part of TISPOL’s week-long speed enforcement operation, running from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 April.

The Speed Marathon concept was devised four years ago in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Here, members of the public have once again been invited to vote on the locations where they would like speed enforcement measures to take place.

Portugal: Easter figures reveal more collisions as fatalities soar

Six people died on Portugal’s roads over the Easter weekend, according to figures from the GNR. During a four-day Easter safety operation, the GNR registered 974 collisions, which caused six deaths, and 19 serious injuries. 
The operation lasted 24 hours longer than last year, when the GNR registered 708 accidents and four deaths.

Lithuania: results from seatbelt operation

For a week in mid March, Lithuanian traffic police officers carried out seatbelt checks across the country, as part of the TISPOL pan European seatbelt operation.  

Officers detected 528 violations of the use of special seat belts and child seats. Last year, 525 such violations were recorded during similar preventive measures, 485 in 2015, and 655 in 2015.
